How do I configure the platform to send SMS with USB modem/dongle?

HSNM Hotspot Manager can send SMS, for example to provide username and password or notifications to guests, using an external SMS Gateway or using a USB modem/dongle directly connected to HSNM.

At the moment these are the USB modem supported by HSNM:

  • Onda TM201
  • Huawei E173
  • Huawei E1750
  • Huawei E620
  • Huawei E1552
  • Huawei E3131
  • Onda MW836UP
  • Onda MDC655
  • Onda MT835UP
  • Onda MDC835UP
  • Onda MT191UP

If you are using the hardware version of HSNM, you have to simply connect the USB modem to one of the USB ports; instead, if you are using the virtual version of HSNM, you have to check that the hosting server has enabled the USB passthrough and that the virtual machine has recognized it.

Generally, with the virtual version of HSNM is highly advised to use an external SMS gateway instead of the USB modem.

Configuration with a USB modem can be made only at the system/admin level under the System Settings menu.

Once connected to the USB modem follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your HSNM using a web browser and an admin account.
  2. On the Admin tab, click System Settings, then on the SMS Gateway Type section and choose Inside as Type of Gateway for SMS.
  3. Move to the SMS section and, if the system has recognized the modem, you will see it on Primary Modem Type.
  4. Set on Message Center Number the message centre number of the SIM card you have put inside the modem.
  5. Set on the Main number the phone number of the SIM card.
  6. Click Save on the top right corner.

If you want to connect an additional modem to your HSNM, please repeat steps from 3 to 6.

Now you can try to send a test SMS going to Utility Functions, then on Send a Test SMS.

To allow the system to send SMS to the guests, you have to give/provide SMS credit to the manager. To do this there are two ways:

  1. Log in to HSNM using a manager account, go to the manager contextual menu and then click on Buy SMS.
  2. Log in to HSNM using an admin account, edit the manager for which you want to provide SMS, go to the SMS Gateway section and set on Total Number of SMS Purchased the number of SMS messages you want to provide.
